The genesis of institutional and non-institutional forms of legal consciousness in Ukraine in different historical periods is traced. In particular, the characteristic features of public legal consciousness during the times of Kievan Rus, the Lithuanian-Polish era and the Russian Empire were identified. The peculiarities of the development of customary law as a basis for non-institutional legal consciousness of Ukrainians are revealed. It is noted that the customary legal situation in Ukraine is geographically and chronologically heterogeneous. However, despite all the differences in the historical development of Volyn, Polissya, Podillya, Dnieper, Slobozhanshchina, Southern Ukraine, customary property relations are identical in basic respects.
